Congas

Congas are tall, barrel-shaped drums of Afro-Cuban origin, traditionally played in sets of two or more drums of varying sizes to create rich, melodic bass lines and complex polyrhythmic patterns. These single-headed drums feature natural or synthetic drumheads mounted on wooden or fiberglass shells, producing deep, resonant tones with excellent sustain and projection. Essential in Latin music genres including salsa, mambo, rumba, and Latin jazz, congas provide the foundational rhythmic heartbeat and intricate hand techniques including open tones, slaps, and heel-toe patterns. Modern congas are available in various sizes from quinto to tumba, with traditional rope tensioning or contemporary hardware systems.
